Baby Talk, parenting, Speech Delays

I’ve been worried a little about my son NOT speaking a word. He is 18 months and 26 days today.

When he was born, I had subscribed to a couple of baby blogs because I was afraid I had lost touch (I have a 10 year old as well and 10 yrs is a loooong time between babies 🙂 ) and to keep myself updated on baby-care and what to expect and what to be concerned about etc etc. One blog gave a monthly update on a baby’s average monthly progress.

When Tristan turned one, we were sloooowly trying to get him to say a few words including Mama & Papa. With no success.

We talk to him everyday, involve him in all that we do.

I had also read that we need not try and make them say any particular words like Mama and Papa. Babies already know who Mama and Papa are. Just talk full sentences to them and they’ll soon pick up words.

So I left it at that.

When he turned 18 months, I got this update from 1 blog :

“Now that your child has mastered some key words, she’ll soon figure out that saying those words REALLY LOUDLY is a surefire way to get your attention. Some toddlers can even make simple two-word sentences such as “No more” or “All done.” And, as your child becomes more self-aware, she may start referring to herself by name: “Claire go,” for example.”

I thought, “Wait, what? Mastered key words??? When?? I haven’t heard these key words!! I haven’t heard even 1 word! He’s still getting our attention by shouting and then taking us by our hand to show us what he wants!!”

And that set my worry on again. 2 weeks ago, I had taken both kids to the doc for their regular check-up and I voiced my concern. Doc told me to not worry and that some kids start talking only at 3 yrs (Wow!) and to continue interacting and talking to him.

So again, I left it at that.

Yesterday, I was on the couch watching TV. And Tristan walks up to me, plants himself on my lap and rests his cheek on my chest. And after a little while, he shyly gazed up at me and quietly said – Mama.

Oooohhh.. Pure instant joy!!!

Wondering what and when his next words will be 🙂

Delicate Doilies

Annie's, Crochet doilies

Doilies are generally a decor that can be overlooked.

But I’ve always found it an interesting project to do because of all the amazing designs used to create a spectacular looking piece. I’ve seen crocheted doilies attached to clutches, cushion covers, edges of table cloths, on lamp-shades and even on dresses!

Doily

I have made only one so far (shown left).  The design is by Annie’s Crochet and is a set of paid pattern that included 13 different designs for doilies. They all look super.

The one I made was simple and uncomplicated enough. Now that I’ve gotten the hang of using such a thin hook, I feel more confident to attempt the others and I plan to do most of them.

But finding the right size of yarn is where I always get stuck! The doilies in this set of patterns mostly require a crochet thread size 10.

I have never seen a size 10 thread and hence, I don’t really know how thick or thin they are. The yarn that I used here was a Turkish brand called Alize and looked thready enough for the project. There wasn’t any size mentioned on the label unfortunately. I selected the blue because it had an amazing hue! A deep peacock lustrous blue! As usual, the photo has not done justice to the color.

And to my joy, the yarn worked well!! It gave a nice finish to the rounds and it didn’t even curl up or look lopsided between rounds. So, to my luck, NO BLOCKING was required (since I have yet to learn how to block)!

If you don’t mind paying for patterns, Annie’s has quite a large collection that can be found on their website – https://www.anniescatalog.com.

The pattern set I bought is called “A Bakers Dozen Easy Crochet Doilies”.

They often come up with offers where patterns can be found starting from 1$ to under 5$.

I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed making this.

The Search for Zenobia

Birds, Nature, Northern Bald Ibis

Zenobia is the name of the missing female Northern Bald Ibis (a bird).

I was listening to the BBC news this morning when the “Search for Zenobia” came on. I am not particularly a bird-lover, but I do love nature. And I think birds and animals are an integral part of our wonderful world. So when this bit of news came up, it sort of caught my attention.

This species has been around since almost 2 million years!! But they are now rare with around 500 of them in Morocco and only a total of 4 in Syria.

In Syria, 3 birds are in captivity and protected while the 4th, Zenobia, is missing. Officials at The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon, have offered a reward of $1,000 for any information on her whereabouts.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

According to them, it is very crucial that she be found because, seemingly, Zenobia is the only bird out of the 4 who knows the winter migration route to Ethiopia. Without her, the other 3 birds cannot be released into the wild which might lead to their extinction despite being protected and cared for.

I have seen videos of animal migration and it is something that I have never ceased to marvel at. It is absolutely one of nature’s most inspiring events. How they find their way back home from wherever they had migrated to is just wonderful. Although, my 10 year old has patiently given me scientific explanations on this process that is according to her text-book, I still like feeling amazed 🙂 .

Coming back to Zenobia, culturally, its interesting to read that the Northern Bald Ibis was believed to be one of the first birds to be released by Noah from his Ark. And this bird was also considered a holy bird and a symbol of brilliance and splendor in Ancient Egypt apart from many other symbolic representations (more info on Wikipedia)

With so much legacy behind this particular species, I sincerely hope they find Zenobia and do all they can to save these birds from extinction!

A Little Boy’s Summer Hat and My Dilemma

Crochet hats, hats, shell stitch

PSX_20150524_085610   20150524_083519   20150524_083517

I have made a hat that I thought would look alright enough for a boy.

I had worked on quite a few summer hat patterns that seemed great for boys, but in the end, when I’m done with them, they all somehow made my 18 month old fellow look girly! Even if they were all in boy colors! I knew it was the ruffly brim for all these hats that made it look so.

But I don’t know how to straighten them out! Should I just shorten the brim? But that wouldn’t help to keep the sun out of his eyes! Or are the hats supposed to look that way?

3 days ago, I came across this pattern that I thought might just be THE ONE. It looked nice, squarish and boyish!

FREE Crochet Pattern – Chameleon Hat – Gone Fishin’

I first worked on the Toddler-Kids size which turned out to be a tad too small for him. So I re-did it by adding an extra increase-round to the crown portion as well as to the beginning sides portion of the pattern instructions. Turns out the increase for the crown portion is for the Adults version of the cap which I didn’t notice earlier because I wasn’t looking for an adult size.

So! My 18 month old needs an adult hat!

Didn’t know we’re a large-headed family since the hat doesn’t fit me either 😀 !

Anyways, I have finished it and sadly, not only does it NOT look squarish and boyish, but the brim still looks ruffly! See the pictures above? That’s him in the hat.

There were 2-3 hats featured in the above website that looked great because the brim didn’t have any ruffles. The pattern asked to use worsted weight acrylic yarns which I believe is category 4. But the yarn in the pictures that I liked looked much thicker than a medium weight!

Could chunky yarns help make unruffled brims? Should I try using 2 strands together of the worsted weight? I hate having to undo everything when they don’t look right! But I guess that’s how one learns.

If I’m going to try it, I’d better get on it today because the temperature is already hitting 44°C here and I am on the brink of just buying him a hat from the stores and being done with it. How boring!

Out of the 8, I am happy to say that I have completed Number 5 & 8 (with different colors, of course). They were easy enough for a beginner.

Number 7 is still a Work-in-Progress and has been for a long time now. I don’t really know if I will ever finish that although its a really pretty piece 🙂

Keen on starting Number 6 by the way, because I have the exact same brand of yarn for it, in variegated colors as well as solids and can’t wait to put it to use! Thinking about alternating the colors between rounds. Will put them up once completed.

The rest, I shall attempt if I ever complete 6 and the never-ending 7.

Now, if only there were a baby or 2 around that I know of so I could gift the completed ones to!

A Little Girl’s Sling Purse

crochet purse

IMAG2489_1[1]  IMAG2483[1]

After a few days of wondering what to get my niece – Amy – for her 4th birthday, I finally decided to make her a purse! Every little girl loves to have her own purse to look all grown up, right?

Whenever she visited us, she would have a small pouch with her and so I thought, why not make her a purse that she can sling around and one that would not be a hassle to carry about.

The reason I decided on a sling is because of a lot of tedious experiences with my 10 yr old who loves carrying a hand-bag crammed to the full with all sorts of “things to survive the day”, but gets tired of it after a little while.

We all know what that means!

I end up carrying both of ours (As if mine is any less heavier)!

So! With my perfect (or is it not?) plan in place, I then rummaged around on the net looking for a suitable pattern for a little girl’s purse. I finally spied one by Vendula Maderska :

http://vendulkam.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html

It looked easy, all colorful and perfect for a 4 year old who loves bright colors. And I had almost all the yarn colors that the picture showed too (minus the beads)! Although the one in the pattern had a drawstring closure (which definitely looks much prettier than what I’ve made), I thought it would be inconvenient for a 4 year old to have to keep tying it up after every use. Hence, I just added a button for the closure to make her purse-life less complicated.

It took me only a day to complete! The fastest project I’ve done so far 😀 . The pattern was really easy, instructions were very clear and there were a lot of pictures to support!

Now all that is left for me to do is to put aside all self-doubts (beginning to think this isn’t a good idea!!!) and just gift it to her!

I truly hope she likes it! 🙂

India, Tourism, Travel

“If we were to look over the whole world to find out the country most richly endowed with all the wealth, power and beauty that nature can bestow – in some parts, a very paradise on earth – I should point to India”. ~ Friedrich Max Müller

India

India.

A land that is so rich in beauty, so colorful and so spiritual, that it evokes a sense of patriotism even in my totally unpatriotic soul.

Being an Indian, I, unfortunately, have seen only a tiny fraction of this great country. But I cringe every time my husband suggests touring it little by little whenever we visit our parents (which is every year!).

Why?

Because India is not really a place for the faint-hearted. There are a lot of issues plaguing the country that will shock you. It is hard to close your eyes to the poverty, the gender inequality, the uncleanliness, the pollution and commotion on the roads, the lack of proper infrastructure, the lack of privacy and to the injustice of it all! There will be people staring at you too long trying to figure you out or sitting too close. There is no such thing as “personal space”. When I am there (which is for a month), I just go with the flow, trying hard to look the other way and not care because, honestly, there really isn’t anything I can do otherwise. The problems are just too huge.

But having said that, somehow, 6 places in India have found their way to my bucket list and I do hope I will, someday, get to see them.

Jaipur   Jodhpur

 Jaipur & Jodhpur (above)

Jaipur, dubbed “the Pink City” after the color-wash of its old city’s walls. Also famous for its palatial hotels (like the one pictured right on top).

Jodhpur, dubbed “the Sun City” because the sun shines brightly here every day of the year and also as “the Blue City” because most houses in the old part of the city are painted blue.

Udaipur

Udaipur (above)

Often called the ‘Venice of the East’. It is also the ‘city of lakes’. The Lake Palace located in the middle of Pichola Lake is the finest example of architectural and cultural marvel.

Darjeeling

Darjeeling (above) :

High up near the Himalayas with Mt. Kanchenjunga as a backdrop, where, ancient forests, quaint houses and friendly people make the trip to this most famous hill station of India worth it. They also have a toy train that enables travelers to explore the wonderful hill station at a calm pace, soaking in the environment and culture of Darjeeling.

valley-of-flowers

Valley of Flowers (above) :

A paradise on earth and home to over 300 species of wild flowers, the Valley of Flowers offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience to naturalist and nature enthusiasts.

and

Manali

Manali (above)

Holding a magical allure for tourists with its incredible landscape abundant greenery and exquisite scenery, Manali evokes many images… fairy-tale snow-capped mountain vistas, flower-covered meadows, glaciers, winding rivers, temples and Buddhist monasteries.

crochet potholders

Pot Holder 1

This is one of the very first projects that I did when I got hooked on to crochet. The best part was that I didn’t have to unravel and re-do any step of the process unlike a few others that I gave up on because the instructions weren’t very clear!

I made 2 color variations of this (one shown above and the other below) and I was sooo incredibly happy when I finished them and they turned out the way they did in the pictures.

I had read that the ideal yarns for pot-holders and other kitchen projects are either cotton or wool. Reasons being :

Cotton won’t melt and is easily cleanable; both of these factors contribute to its popularity.

Wool is also a great choice for potholders; not only will it not melt, but it’s self-extinguishing, so if you accidentally catch it on fire the fire is likely to go out on its own. The downside is that wool is not as easy to clean.

Although I didn’t have cotton yarns with me at the time (I still don’t 😀 ) and I used acrylic to make mine, I felt they were too pretty to be hiding in the kitchen!

How can such pretty things be used for something as mundane as holding pots or keeping kitchen vessels on?? I couldn’t bear to leave mine in there, so I’ve left them on my coffee table with a vase of flowers near it. I keep alternating them every 2 weeks along with another doily that I made which I will put up later on. I won’t be able to go much into the details of the doily, though, as that was a paid pattern.

Pot Holder 2

For the potholders, I followed the instructions from the designer of Color’n Cream – http://colorncream.blogspot.nl/2013/01/tutorial-vintage-flower-potholder.html

I absolutely love all her creations. The color scheme she uses are so bright and cheerful! They’re wonderful to look at!

I do hope you enjoy making them too!

Summer Hats 1 – Shell Stitch Sun Hat

Shell Stitch Sun Hat

Shell Stitch Sun Hat

Summer is already here and what better way to beat the heat than with crocheted hats?

I made this hat featured above based on a pattern by Lauren from Daisy Cottage Designs. The link to her pattern is :

http://daisycottagedesigns.net/crochet/shell-stitch-sun-hat-free-crochet-pattern/

Although the pattern says it fits children 4-8 yrs old, mine fits my niece Zoe, who is 15 months old, very nicely. It could be because the yarn I used was a mercerized cotton yarn (only ones available at hand) and I used 2 strands of it in order to adjust with the hook size. Hence, I have my doubts about my hat fitting anyone older than 2 yrs :D.

Anyways, I feel the hat turned out well. I love the color and my niece looked absolutely adorable in it! I must get a picture of her wearing it and post that too.

Coming back to the yarn, I really need to get out there and look around for some nice, proper worsted cotton yarns to make more of these. But being where I am, the cottony ones seem quite hard to find and way too expensive . Acrylics-a-plenty though.

Good luck to me!

Bobbles, Crochet, Shells

Hello Everyone!

My first blog and I’m sooo excited about it.

I truly hope (fingers crossed) I can keep it up and running 🙂

I got into crocheting 3 years ago and what started out as a light hobby has got me totally hooked and bewitched.

Its amazing!

I spend hours surfing the net and marveling at all the creations and especially the creativity behind those creations, hoping I could someday be as good!

Although a novice, I have learned heaps from experts. For those who would like to learn to crochet, I will include links to other expert crocheters who have videos and written instructions of their own patterns.

It really is a very fulfilling hobby and I hope you all enjoy it!
