After a few days of wondering what to get my niece – Amy – for her 4th birthday, I finally decided to make her a purse! Every little girl loves to have her own purse to look all grown up, right?

Whenever she visited us, she would have a small pouch with her and so I thought, why not make her a purse that she can sling around and one that would not be a hassle to carry about.

The reason I decided on a sling is because of a lot of tedious experiences with my 10 yr old who loves carrying a hand-bag crammed to the full with all sorts of “things to survive the day”, but gets tired of it after a little while.

We all know what that means!

I end up carrying both of ours (As if mine is any less heavier)!

So! With my perfect (or is it not?) plan in place, I then rummaged around on the net looking for a suitable pattern for a little girl’s purse. I finally spied one by Vendula Maderska :

http://vendulkam.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html

It looked easy, all colorful and perfect for a 4 year old who loves bright colors. And I had almost all the yarn colors that the picture showed too (minus the beads)! Although the one in the pattern had a drawstring closure (which definitely looks much prettier than what I’ve made), I thought it would be inconvenient for a 4 year old to have to keep tying it up after every use. Hence, I just added a button for the closure to make her purse-life less complicated.

It took me only a day to complete! The fastest project I’ve done so far 😀 . The pattern was really easy, instructions were very clear and there were a lot of pictures to support!

Now all that is left for me to do is to put aside all self-doubts (beginning to think this isn’t a good idea!!!) and just gift it to her!

I truly hope she likes it! 🙂

crochet potholders

Pot Holder 1

This is one of the very first projects that I did when I got hooked on to crochet. The best part was that I didn’t have to unravel and re-do any step of the process unlike a few others that I gave up on because the instructions weren’t very clear!

I made 2 color variations of this (one shown above and the other below) and I was sooo incredibly happy when I finished them and they turned out the way they did in the pictures.

I had read that the ideal yarns for pot-holders and other kitchen projects are either cotton or wool. Reasons being :

Cotton won’t melt and is easily cleanable; both of these factors contribute to its popularity.

Wool is also a great choice for potholders; not only will it not melt, but it’s self-extinguishing, so if you accidentally catch it on fire the fire is likely to go out on its own. The downside is that wool is not as easy to clean.

Although I didn’t have cotton yarns with me at the time (I still don’t 😀 ) and I used acrylic to make mine, I felt they were too pretty to be hiding in the kitchen!

How can such pretty things be used for something as mundane as holding pots or keeping kitchen vessels on?? I couldn’t bear to leave mine in there, so I’ve left them on my coffee table with a vase of flowers near it. I keep alternating them every 2 weeks along with another doily that I made which I will put up later on. I won’t be able to go much into the details of the doily, though, as that was a paid pattern.

Pot Holder 2

For the potholders, I followed the instructions from the designer of Color’n Cream – http://colorncream.blogspot.nl/2013/01/tutorial-vintage-flower-potholder.html

I absolutely love all her creations. The color scheme she uses are so bright and cheerful! They’re wonderful to look at!

I do hope you enjoy making them too!

Shell Stitch Sun Hat

Shell Stitch Sun Hat

Summer is already here and what better way to beat the heat than with crocheted hats?

I made this hat featured above based on a pattern by Lauren from Daisy Cottage Designs. The link to her pattern is :

http://daisycottagedesigns.net/crochet/shell-stitch-sun-hat-free-crochet-pattern/

Although the pattern says it fits children 4-8 yrs old, mine fits my niece Zoe, who is 15 months old, very nicely. It could be because the yarn I used was a mercerized cotton yarn (only ones available at hand) and I used 2 strands of it in order to adjust with the hook size. Hence, I have my doubts about my hat fitting anyone older than 2 yrs :D.

Anyways, I feel the hat turned out well. I love the color and my niece looked absolutely adorable in it! I must get a picture of her wearing it and post that too.

Coming back to the yarn, I really need to get out there and look around for some nice, proper worsted cotton yarns to make more of these. But being where I am, the cottony ones seem quite hard to find and way too expensive . Acrylics-a-plenty though.

Good luck to me!

Bobbles, Crochet, Shells

Hello Everyone!

My first blog and I’m sooo excited about it.

I truly hope (fingers crossed) I can keep it up and running 🙂

I got into crocheting 3 years ago and what started out as a light hobby has got me totally hooked and bewitched.

Its amazing!

I spend hours surfing the net and marveling at all the creations and especially the creativity behind those creations, hoping I could someday be as good!

Although a novice, I have learned heaps from experts. For those who would like to learn to crochet, I will include links to other expert crocheters who have videos and written instructions of their own patterns.

It really is a very fulfilling hobby and I hope you all enjoy it!
